DEFINITIONS 

Headaches due to cough is a type of unusual headache triggered by coughing or other types of stress (such as sneezing, laughing, crying, singing, and others).

Doctors divide cough headaches into two categories. The first is the primary category are usually harmless, occur in a short time and eventually heal by itself. The second category is more serious, namely the secondary category, which is caused by structural problems in the brain, requiring surgery to fix it. 

SYMPTOMS 

Headaches due to cough primary category
• It started suddenly with or after coughing or other tensions.
• Occur in a few seconds or minutes (a few may end up more than 30 minutes).
• Have a sharp pain, like stabbing or tearing.
• Usually the attack on the two sides of the head and usually occurs on the back of the head.


Headaches due to cough secondary category
Headache this category often have the same symptoms with the primary category, but this category can occur more than a minute, can be up to several days. 


CAUSES, RISK FACTORS & PREVENTION 

Causes

Causes of primary categories of headache is unknown, some scientists thought that the cause is the increased pressure inside the head (intracranial pressure) caused by coughing and other tensions that play a role.


- Headaches due to cough secondary category
Causes of secondary headache category is almost always derived from the brain or in the back of the skull base, where the brain and spinal related, such as:
• Damage to the skeleton

•Damage to the structure of the cerebellum. Some types of damage are called Chiari malformation.
• Brain tumors


Risk factors

Headaches due to cough primary category
• Aged 40 years and over
• Men


Headaches due to cough secondary category
• Aged under 40 years


Prevention

Prevent trigger cough headaches can reduce the amount of your headache. Some precautions are:
• Experiencing lung infections, like bronchitis
• Use a cough suppressant that is required
• Taking an annual flu vaccination
• Use a soft stool to avoid constipation
• Reduce heavy lifting
