Massage Relieves Headaches

Massage therapy attract attention of scientists for examination. A study by scientists at the University of Granada, Spain, in collaboration with the San Cecilio Hospital and the University of Rey Juan Carlos, said that the psychological and physiological state of patients with tension headaches, improved within 24 hours after receiving a massage for 30 minutes. 

As described by researchers, headaches because tension is an increased incidence among the population. Disorders of this type is usually treated with analgesics, which relieve symptoms temporarily. One of the main causes of this type of headache is the presence of trigger points. Recently, a new strategy to control this pain is being investigated.

Cristina Toro Velasco, a leader of this research, under the supervision of Professor Manuel Arroyo Morales, showed that 30 minutes massage on the trigger points of the cervix (neck) to increase regulation of the autonomic nervous system in these patients. In addition, patients showed a better psychological state and reduce stress and anxiety. 

Similarly, patients reported feeling recovered from these symptoms within 24 hours after the massage. This may mean that massage can reduce pain caused by trigger points, which will improve the condition of patients in general. 

The results of this study have been published in the American Journal of Manipulative Physiological and Therapeutics.
